List of tectonic plates a list of tectonic plates on Earth. Tectonic plates are pieces of the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle, together referred to as the lithosphere. The plates are around 100 km (60 miles) thick and consist of two principal types of material: oceanic crust (also called sima from silicon and magnesium) and continental crust (sial from silicon and aluminium)

Plate tectonics a tip
Plate tectonics the Earth's surface is made up of a series of large plates (like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle). These plates are in constant motion travelling at a few centimetres per year. The ocean floors are continually moving, spreading from the centre and sinking at the edges

Sea-floor spreading sea-floor spreading
Sea-floor spreading sea-floor spreading is the mechanism that generates divergent plate boundaries; creates oceanic crust and separates continents
